- 1 ½ pounds 700g boneless chicken thighs or breasts
- 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon red food color optional, for classic look
Prepare the marinade
In a large bowl, mix hoisin sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, honey, brown sugar, rice wine, sesame oil, five-spice powder, garlic, and food color. Stir well until smooth. This will be your flavorful marinade.
Marinate the chicken
Place your chicken pieces in the bowl. Make sure every piece is covered with the sauce. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. For the best taste, let it marinate overnight. The longer it sits, the richer the flavor.
Preheat the oven or grill
Bake or grill the chicken
Bake for 20 minutes. Then brush some of the leftover marinade on top. Flip the chicken and brush the other side too. Continue baking for another 15–20 minutes or until fully cooked.
If grilling, cook for 6–8 minutes on each side. Brush with sauce while grilling to get that shiny glaze.
- Use chicken thighs for more flavor and tenderness.
- Don’t skip marinating; it gives deep taste.
- Add a few drops of red food color for that restaurant-style look.
- Brush the chicken often with marinade while cooking.
- Don’t overcook — juicy chicken tastes the best.
- Let it rest before slicing to keep the juices inside.
