Ingredients

  • 6 large APPLES
  • 1 tbsp LEMON JUICE
  • 1/2 cup WHITE SUGAR
  • 2 tsp CINNAMON
  • 1 cup ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR
  • 1 cup OLD FASHIONED OATS
  • 1 cup BROWN SUGAR
  • 1/2 cup BUTTER
  • 1 pinch SALT

Instructions

Step 1:

  • Turn your oven to 350 degrees now. Let it get very hot first. This ensures even cooking for your dessert.

Step 2:

  • Wash all of your apples very well. Peel the skins off with your peeler. Remove the core from each apple carefully.

Step 3:

  • Slice the apples into thin, even pieces. Put them into your large mixing bowl. Add the lemon juice to the fruit.

Step 4:

  • Sprinkle white sugar over the sliced apples. Add half of your ground cinnamon too. Toss the apples to coat them well.

Step 5:

  • Grease your baking dish with some butter. Pour the apple mixture into the dish. Spread them out into one flat layer.

Step 6:

  • Grab your medium bowl for the crust. Mix the flour and the rolled oats. Add the brown sugar and remaining cinnamon.

Step 7:

  • Cut the cold butter into small cubes. Add the butter cubes to the flour. Use your pastry cutter to mix it.

Step 8:

  • The mix should look like coarse crumbs. Do not overmix the buttery topping. It should have some small butter lumps.

Step 9:

  • Sprinkle the topping over the apple layer. Cover all of the fruit pieces well. Use your hands to spread it out.

Step 10:

  • Place the dish into the hot oven. Bake it for about 45 minutes. The top should look very golden brown.

Step 11:

  • The apple juice should be bubbling. Take the dish out of the oven. Let it sit for ten minutes.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for the best flavor.
  • Keep your butter very cold for extra crunch.
  • Slice the apples into very thin, equal pieces.
  • Do not peel the apples if you prefer fiber.
  • Add chopped pecans for an extra nutty taste.
  • Double the topping if you love the crust.
  • Check the oven often so it does not burn.
  • Use a glass dish to see the bubbles.
  • Always serve this dessert while it is warm.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg for more spice.
