Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • 9-inch pie plate.
  • Measuring cups
  • Small Pot
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups SUGAR
  • 1/2 cup BUTTER melted
  • 3 large EGGS
  • 1 cup BUTTERMILK
  • 3 tbsp FLOUR
  • 1 tsp VANILLA EXTRACT
  • 1 pinch SALT
  • 1 9- inch PIE CRUST unbaked

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Set your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Let it get hot while you prep the filling. A steady heat is very important for eggs.

Prepare the Crust

  • Place your unbaked pie crust into the plate. Press it down firmly against the bottom and sides. Crimp the edges with a fork for a nice look.

Beat the Eggs

  • Crack the eggs into your large mixing bowl. Whisk them until they are light and very foamy. This adds air to the custard for lightness.

Add Sugar and Flour

  • Slowly pour the sugar and flour into the eggs. Keep whisking until the mixture is thick and smooth. Make sure there are no white flour lumps.

Mix in Liquids

  • Add the buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir everything together until the color is very even. Add the tiny pinch of salt now.

Fill the Crust

  • Pour the liquid filling into the prepared pie crust. Fill it nearly to the top but do not spill. Carefully carry the plate to the oven rack.

Bake the Pie

  • Bake the pie for about forty-five to fifty minutes. The center should have a very slight jiggle. The top will look golden brown and beautiful.

Cool and Set

  • Remove the pie and place it on a rack. Let it cool completely at room temperature first. This helps the custard firm up for slicing.

Notes

➔ Use room temperature eggs for a smoother mix.
➔ Do not over-bake or the custard will crack.
➔ Real buttermilk works better than a milk substitute.
➔ Cover crust edges with foil if they brown fast.
➔ Let the pie chill for even cleaner slices.
➔ Whisk the sugar well to get a crispy top.
➔ Use a deep dish plate to avoid any spills.
