Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups
  • Wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 3 Tbsp All-purpose Flour
  • 2 Cups Whole Milk
  • 4 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  • Whisk the sugar and cocoa in your saucepan. Add the flour to the dry mixture now. Stir them until they are well combined and even.
  • Pour the milk into the pan very slowly. Whisk constantly to avoid making any lumps. Keep the mixture smooth as you add the liquid.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat on the stove. Stir the mixture without stopping for several minutes. This prevents the bottom from burning or sticking.
  • Wait for the gravy to begin to thicken. It should look like a warm chocolate pudding. This usually takes about seven to ten minutes total.
  • Remove the pan from the heat source immediately. Stir in the butter and the vanilla extract now. Watch the butter melt into the dark chocolate.

Notes

  • Whisk the dry ingredients first to remove large lumps.
  • Cook the gravy over low heat to avoid scorching.
  • Add a pinch of salt to boost the chocolate.
  • Use whole milk for the most authentic Southern texture.
  • Stir constantly until the gravy coats the back spoon.
  • Serve the gravy immediately while it is still steaming.
