Equipment

  • Large Skillet with Lid
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Can opener
  • Liquid Measuring Cup

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Cup Long Grain White Rice
  • 1/2 Cup Chopped Onion
  • 1 Tsp Minced Garlic
  • 2 Cups Chicken Broth
  • 1/2 Cup Tomato Sauce
  • 1 Tsp Ground Cumin
  • 1/2 Tsp Salt
  • 1/4 Tsp Black Pepper

Instructions

  • Place your large skillet on the stove. Turn the heat to medium-high. Add the vegetable oil to the pan.
  • Add the dry white rice to the hot oil. Stir the rice constantly for five minutes. It should look golden brown and toasted.
  • Add the chopped onions to the skillet now. Cook them until they become soft and clear. Then stir in the minced garlic.
  • Pour the chicken broth and tomato sauce in carefully. Add the cumin, salt, and black pepper. Stir everything together one time.
  • Bring the liquid to a boil quickly. Turn the heat down to very low. Place the lid on the skillet tightly.
  • Simmer the rice for twenty minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time. The steam cooks the rice perfectly.
  • Turn off the heat after twenty minutes. Let the pan sit for five minutes. Use a fork to fluff the rice.

Notes

  • Toast the rice until it is golden brown.
  • Use hot chicken broth for better results.
  • Do not stir the rice while it simmers.
  • Keep the lid closed for the whole time.
  • Let the rice rest before serving it.
