Equipment

  • A large Dutch oven.
  • Kitchen tongs
  • A sharp knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • A wooden spoon.

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds beef short ribs.
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour.
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil.
  • 2 large onions chopped.
  • 3 cloves garlic minced.
  • 2 cups beef broth.
  • 1 cup red wine optional.
  • 2 tablespoons butter.
  • Salt and black pepper to taste.

Instructions

  • Season the ribs with salt and pepper well. Roll each rib in the flour. Shake off any extra flour.
  • Heat oil in your Dutch oven. Brown the ribs on all sides. Move them to a clean plate.
  • Add onions to the same hot pot. Cook until they are soft and brown. Add the garlic for one minute.
  • Pour in the broth and wine. Scrape the tasty brown bits from the bottom.
  • Put the ribs back into the pot. Cover it with a tight lid. Simmer on low heat for three hours.
  • Remove the ribs once they are tender. Stir butter into the sauce. Pour the gravy over the meat.

Notes

  • Do not rush the searing process.
  • Use high-quality beef for the best results.
  • Let the ribs simmer slowly on low heat.
  • Always use fresh garlic for better flavor.
  • Serve with creamy mashed potatoes or grits.
