Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Pastry Cutter
  • Baking sheet
  • Rolling Pin
  • Measuring cups
  • Biscuit Cutter
  • Pastry brush
  • Wire cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Self-rising Flour
  • 1 Tsp Sugar
  • 4 Tbsp Cold Salted Butter
  • 2 Tbsp Vegetable Shortening
  • 3/4 Cup Cold Buttermilk
  • 2 Tbsp Melted Butter

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit now. Line a baking sheet with some parchment paper. This will keep the biscuits from sticking.
  • In a large bowl, whisk the flour and sugar. Make sure they are mixed well together. This ensures a consistent taste in every bite.
  • Add the cold butter and shortening to flour. Use your pastry cutter to mix them in. The mix should look like small peas.
  • Make a small well in the center now. Pour the cold buttermilk into that well. Stir gently until a soft dough forms.
  • Place the dough on a floured surface carefully. Fold the dough over about five times. This step creates the famous flaky layers.
  • Roll the dough to one inch thick now. Use your biscuit cutter to press straight down. Do not twist the cutter while working.
  • Place biscuits on your baking sheet slowly. Let them touch for a higher rise. Bake for about twelve to fifteen minutes.
  • Remove them when the tops are golden brown. Brush the tops with melted butter immediately. Serve them while they are still hot.

Notes

  • Always use very cold butter for best results.
  • Do not overwork the dough with your hands.
  • Ensure the oven is fully hot before baking.
  • Press the cutter straight down without any twisting.
  • Let the biscuits touch on the baking sheet.
