Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Can opener
  • Mixing spoon
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Measuring cups
  • Small Mesh Strainer
  • Serving bowl

Ingredients

  • 12 oz CANNED TUNA
  • 1/2 cup MAYONNAISE
  • 1/4 cup CELERY
  • 2 tbsp ONION
  • 2 tbsp SWEET PICKLE RELISH
  • 2 large HARD BOILED EGGS
  • 1 tsp LEMON JUICE
  • 1/4 tsp SALT
  • 1/4 tsp BLACK PEPPER

Instructions

Drain the Tuna

  • Open your cans of tuna with a can opener. Press the lid down to squeeze out all liquid. Put the dry tuna into your mixing bowl.

Prep the Add-ins

  • Chop the celery and onion into very small pieces. Peel and chop your hard-boiled eggs. Add these items into the bowl with the tuna.

Add the Creamy Base

  • Scoop the mayonnaise into the large mixing bowl. Add the sweet pickle relish on top of that. This creates the famous Southern texture.

Season the Mix

  • Pour in the fresh lemon juice for some zing. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and black pepper. Do not add too much salt at first.

Stir Everything Together

  • Use your spoon to fold the ingredients together. Break up any large chunks of tuna as you stir. Make sure the mayo coats every single piece.

Chill and Serve

  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid. Put it in the fridge for thirty minutes. Serve it cold on bread or with crackers.

Notes

➜ Drain the tuna very well to avoid a watery salad.
➜ Dice the onions very small for a subtle flavor.
➜ Use full-fat mayonnaise for the most authentic Southern taste.
➜ Let the salad chill to let flavors blend together.
➜ Add a pinch of dill for an extra herbal note.
➜ Serve on toasted bread for a nice texture contrast.
