Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Frying Pan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Pastry brush
  • Parchment paper

Ingredients

  • 1 Package Active Dry Yeast
  • 2 ½ Cups Warm Water
  • 1 Cup Whole Milk
  • ½ Cup Salted Butter
  • ½ Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 10 Cups All-purpose Flour
  • 2 Pounds Ground Beef
  • 1 Large Yellow Onion
  • 4 Cups Shredded Cabbage
  • 2 Teaspoons Salt
  • 2 Teaspoons Black Pepper
  • 2 Cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese

Instructions

  • Add your yeast and warm water to the large mixing bowl. Whisk them together for ten seconds. Let it sit for ten minutes until it looks frothy.
  • Microwave your whole milk for twenty seconds until it feels warm. Melt your salted butter in a separate small bowl. Let the butter cool down for a few minutes.
  • Add the warm milk and melted butter to the yeast. Stir the mixture gently for one minute. Add your sugar and eggs to the bowl now.
  • Begin adding your all-purpose flour one cup at a time. Mix well after each cup. Switch to a dough hook when it gets thick.
  • Place the dough on a lightly floured flat surface. Knead the dough ball with your hands for two minutes. Form it into a smooth and uniform ball shape.
  • Place the dough ball inside a well-oiled glass bowl. Cover it tightly with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm spot for one hour.
  • Chop your yellow onion and green cabbage into small pieces. Place two tablespoons of butter into your large frying pan. Turn the stove to medium heat now.
  • Add the shredded cabbage and onion to the hot pan. Cook for seven minutes until they are soft. Stir the veggies frequently so they do not burn.
  • Add your ground beef to the large frying pan next. Cook the meat until it is fully browned. Make sure to drain all excess grease from the pan.
  • Mix the beef, cabbage, and onions together in the bowl. Season the mixture with your salt and pepper. Let the hot filling cool down before the next step.
  • Preheat your kitchen oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit now. Punch down your risen dough gently with your fist. Separate the large dough into eighteen equal balls.
  • Roll each dough ball out on a floured surface. Make them into flat circles about six inches wide. Do not roll the dough too thin.
  • Place some shredded cheddar cheese in the center of the dough. Top the cheese with a half cup of meat filling. Do not overfill the dough circles.
  • Pull the opposite edges of the dough over the beef. Pinch the seams very tightly to seal the roll. Make sure no filling can leak out during baking.
  • Place each roll seam side down on the baking sheet. Line the sheet with your clean parchment paper first. Space the rolls one inch apart from each other.
  • Bake the rolls in the oven for thirty minutes total. Rotate the baking pan halfway through the cooking time. Remove them when the tops look beautiful and golden.
  • Brush the tops of the hot rolls with melted butter. Let them cool down for five minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious homemade meal with your family.

Notes

  • Always ensure your water is warm but not too hot.
  • Drain the beef grease completely to prevent soggy bread pockets.
  • Pinch the dough seams tightly with wet fingers to seal.
  • Let the filling cool completely before placing it on dough.
  • Use a food processor to shred your cabbage very quickly.
  • Rotate your baking sheet for even browning on all sides.
