Ingredients

  • 1 large loaf of French bread.
  • 1/2 cup salted butter softened.
  • 1/2 cup high-quality olive oil.
  • 4 cloves garlic finely minced.
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese.
  • 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley chopped.
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt.

Instructions

Slice the Bread

  • Take your long loaf of French bread. Use a serrated knife to cut it in half. Cut it lengthwise so you have two long pieces.

Mix the Butter

  • Get a small mixing bowl. Add the softened butter and olive oil. Stir them until the mixture is very smooth.

Add the Garlic

  • Put the minced garlic into the butter. Add the fresh parsley and salt too. Mix well so the garlic is everywhere.

Spread the Mix

  • Lay the bread on a baking sheet. Use a spatula to spread the garlic butter. Cover every inch of the white bread.

Add the Cheese

  • Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese over the butter. Then add the Monterey Jack cheese on top. Use a lot of cheese for the best taste.

Set the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Make sure the rack is in the middle. This helps the bread bake evenly.

Bake the Loaf

  • Place the baking sheet in the oven. Bake for about 10 to 15 minutes. The cheese should be melted and bubbly.

Broil for Color

  • Turn the oven to the broil setting. Watch the bread very closely now. Let it brown for just one minute.

Notes

  • Use fresh garlic. It has a much stronger and better taste.
  • Soften your butter. Cold butter is very hard to spread evenly.
  • Mix oil and butter. The oil prevents the butter from burning quickly.
  • Use a serrated knife. This keeps the bread from getting squished.
  • Grate your own cheese. It melts much smoother than bagged cheese.
  • Watch the broiler. Bread can burn in just a few seconds.
  • Add a pinch of chili. Red pepper flakes add a nice tiny kick.
  • Use crusty bread. Soft sandwich bread will get too soggy.
  • Serve it immediately. Warm cheese has the best texture.
