Ingredients

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour.
  • 2 cups of white sugar.
  • 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder.
  • 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt.
  • 1/2 cup of whole milk.
  • 1/4 cup of melted butter.
  • 1/2 cup of hot water.

Instructions

Prep the Oven

  • Heat your oven to 350°F before you start. Grease your baking dish with butter.

Mix Dry Parts

  • Put flour, 1 cup sugar, and baking powder. Add the salt to the large bowl.

Stir the Dry

  • Use a whisk to mix these parts. Make sure there are no large lumps.

Add Wet Parts

  • Pour in the milk and melted butter. Stir until the batter is very thick.

Spread the Batter

  • Put the batter into the greased dish. Use a spoon to spread it out.

Make the Topping

  • Mix 1 cup sugar and cocoa powder. Sprinkle this over the raw batter evenly.

Add Hot Water

  • Pour the hot water over the top. Do not stir the water or sugar.

Bake the Cobbler

  • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes total. The top should be firm and crusty.

Notes

  • Do not stir the water. This creates the chocolate sauce at bottom.
  • Use very hot water. This helps the sugar melt into sauce.
  • Sift the cocoa powder. It prevents bitter lumps in your topping.
  • Serve with ice cream. Cold vanilla melts into the warm chocolate.
  • Check the center. The top should feel like a soft cookie.
  • Eat it while warm. The sauce is best right out oven.
