Ingredients

  • 10 large Granny Smith or Gala apples.
  • 1/2 cup of granulated white sugar.
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar.
  • 1 cup of cold water.
  • 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon.
  • 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice.
  • 1 pinch of kosher salt.

Instructions

Peel the apples

  • Use your peeler to remove all the skin. Smooth apples make the best sauce for eating.

Core and slice

  • Remove the seeds and the hard middle part. Slice the apples into small, even chunks now.

Add to the pot

  • Put all your apple slices into the crockpot. Do not fill it past the top line.

Add the liquids

  • Pour the water and lemon juice over the meat. This keeps the apples from turning very brown.

Add the sweetness

  • Sprinkle the white sugar and brown sugar inside. The brown sugar adds a deep caramel taste.

Season with spice

  • Add the cinnamon and a tiny pinch of salt. Salt makes the apple flavor stand out more.

Start the cooking

  • Set your crockpot to the low heat setting. Let it cook slowly for about 6 hours.

Mash the apples

  • Use a potato masher to crush the soft fruit. You can leave some chunks for a texture.

Cool and serve

  • Let the sauce cool down for a little bit. Serve it in small bowls for your family.

Notes

  • Mix your apples: Use two different types of apples. This makes the flavor more complex and sweet.
  • Watch the water: Do not add too much liquid at first. The apples will release their own natural juices.
  • Keep it chunky: Only mash a little for a rustic feel. Or blend it for a very smooth sauce.
  • Store it right: Keep the sauce in glass jars. It stays fresh in the fridge for one week.
  • Try extra spices: Add a tiny bit of nutmeg or cloves. This makes it taste like a holiday pie.
  • Avoid burning: Stir the pot once halfway through the time. This helps the sugar melt very evenly.
