Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of crusty French bread.
  • 8 large whole eggs.
  • 2 cups of whole milk.
  • 1/2 cup of heavy cream.
  • 1/2 cup of white sugar.
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar.
  • 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract.
  • 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour.
  • 1/2 cup of cold butter.
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

Instructions

Prep the Bread

  • Cut your French bread into cubes. Make the cubes about one inch. Grease your large baking dish well. Spread the bread cubes inside it. Ensure they cover the bottom evenly.

Mix the Liquid

  • Crack the eggs into a bowl. Add the milk and heavy cream. Pour in the white sugar. Add the vanilla extract as well. Whisk everything until it is smooth.

Soak the Bread

  • Pour the egg mixture over bread. Make sure every cube is wet. Press the bread down a little. This helps it soak up liquid. Cover the dish with foil.

Let it Rest

  • Put the dish in the fridge. Let it sit for many hours. Overnight is best for the flavor. The bread becomes very soft now.

Make the Topping

  • Mix flour and brown sugar together. Add the cinnamon and salt. Cut in the cold butter pieces. Use a pastry cutter for this. It should look like coarse crumbs.

Add the Topping

  • Take the dish out of fridge. Remove the aluminum foil cover. Sprinkle the butter mixture on top. Cover the whole surface with it.

Bake the Casserole

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Bake for about 45 minutes. The top should be golden brown. The center should be set firmly.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Let it cool for five minutes. Slice it into large square pieces. Serve it with warm maple syrup. Add some fresh berries on top.

Notes

  • Use bread that is slightly dry. Stale bread soaks up more liquid.
  • Do not use thin white bread. It will turn into soft mush.
  • Keep the butter very cold. Cold butter makes the topping crunchy.
  • Add pecans to the topping. This adds a nice nutty flavor.
  • Use high-quality vanilla extract. It makes a big taste difference.
  • Let it sit overnight. The texture is much better later.
  • Grease the dish very well. This prevents the edges from sticking.
  • Check the center before pulling out. It should not be wobbly.
