Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened.
  • 3/4 cup granulated white sugar.
  • 3 large eggs room temperature.
  • 2 teaspoons pure almond extract.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour.
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder.
  • 1/4 teaspoon table salt.
  • 2 cups powdered sugar for glaze.
  • 3 tablespoons whole milk.
  • Colorful nonpareil sprinkles.

Instructions

Cream the Butter

  • Put the butter and white sugar in a bowl. Beat them until the mixture is very smooth. This creates a light and fluffy cookie base.

Add the Eggs

  • Mix in the eggs one at a time. Add the almond and vanilla extracts next. The dough should smell very sweet and nutty.

Whisk Dry Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, whisk the flour and powder. Add the salt to the dry flour mixture. Stir them so the leavening is well spread.

Form the Dough

  • Slowly add the flour to the wet mixture. Mix on low until a soft dough forms. The dough will be slightly sticky but firm.

Roll the Balls

  • Scoop a tablespoon of dough into your hands. Roll it into a smooth, round ball. Place them on your lined baking sheet.

Bake the Cookies

  • Put the sheets in a 350°F oven. Bake for only 8 to 10 minutes. The bottoms should be brown but tops pale.

Make the Glaze

  • Whisk powdered sugar and milk in a bowl. Add a drop of almond extract for flavor. The glaze should be thick but pourable.

Dip and Decorate

  • Dip the cooled cookie tops into the glaze. Quickly add the sprinkles before the glaze sets. Let them dry on a wire rack.

Notes

  • Use almond extract for that classic Italian flavor.
  • Do not overbake these cookies or they get dry.
  • Let the cookies cool completely before you dip them.
  • Use a lot of sprinkles to make them festive.
  • Sift the powdered sugar to avoid any glaze lumps.
  • Add a little extra milk if glaze is thick.
  • Use room temperature eggs for a better dough rise.
  • Line your pans so the bottoms do not burn.
  • Store them in a single layer while drying out.
  • Add lemon zest for a bright citrus twist instead.
