Instructions
Step 1:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees now. Let it get very hot and ready. This ensures the potatoes start cooking immediately.
Step 2:
Wash and peel all of your russet potatoes. Rinse them under cold water very well. Dry them with a clean paper towel.
Step 3:
Slice the potatoes into very thin rounds. Try to make them all the same size. This helps them cook at the same rate.
Step 4:
Grease your baking dish with plenty of butter. This stops the potatoes from sticking. Do not skip this important step.
Step 5:
Place one layer of potatoes in the pan. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on them. Add a few slices of yellow onion.
Step 6:
Whisk the milk and heavy cream together. Add the flour and garlic to the bowl. Mix until the sauce is very smooth.
Step 7:
Pour some of the sauce over the potatoes. Repeat this until all the potatoes are used. Make sure the top layer is flat.
Step 8:
Add a few small dots of butter on top. This creates a very beautiful golden crust. It adds extra richness to the dish.
Step 9:
Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil. Place it in the center of the oven. This traps the heat for even cooking.
Step 10:
Bake the potatoes for about sixty minutes. The sauce should be bubbling and very hot. The potatoes should start to soften.
Step 11:
Remove the foil from the baking dish now. Bake for thirty more minutes until golden. The top should look very crispy.
Notes
Slice potatoes very thin for a faster bake.
Use heavy cream for the most decadent sauce.
Let the dish rest before you start serving.
Add extra cheese on top for gooey finish.
Always grease the pan corners to prevent sticking.
Use fresh garlic cloves for the best aroma.
Cover the dish tightly to steam potatoes well.
Check the tenderness with a kitchen fork often.
