Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of lean ground beef.
  • 1 large head of green cabbage chopped.
  • 1 medium yellow onion finely diced.
  • 3 cloves of garlic minced.
  • 2 cups of cooked white or brown rice.
  • 2 cans 15 ounces of tomato sauce.
  • 1 can 14 ounces of diced tomatoes.
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar.
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon of kosher salt.
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper.

Instructions

Brown the Meat

  • Heat your large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and the diced onions. Cook until the meat is brown and crumbled.

Add the Aromatics

  • Stir in the minced garlic and the salt. Add the black pepper to the meat mixture. Cook for two more minutes until it smells great.

Drain the Fat

  • Carefully pour off the extra grease from the pan. This keeps the casserole from being too oily. Return the pan to the stove heat.

Build the Sauce

  • Add the tomato sauce and the diced tomatoes. Stir in the brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce. Let the sauce simmer for five minutes.

Mix in Rice

  • Add the cooked rice to the meat and sauce. Stir it well so the rice is red. This is the heart of your casserole filling.

Layer the Cabbage

  • Place half of the chopped cabbage in the dish. Spread half of the meat mixture on top. Repeat the layers one more time carefully.

Cover and Bake

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake the casserole for 45 to 50 minutes.

Finish the Bake

  • Remove the foil for the last ten minutes. This helps the top get thick and bubbly. Serve it hot in deep bowls today!

Notes

  • Chop cabbage small: Smaller pieces cook faster and are softer.
  • Lean ground beef: Use 90% lean meat for the best results.
  • Cooked rice: Always use rice that is already cooked.
  • Sweet and sour: Add a splash of vinegar for more tang.
  • Brown sugar: Do not skip sugar; it balances the tomatoes.
  • Tight seal: Make sure the foil is very tight.
  • Let it rest: Let the dish sit before you eat.
  • Add heat: Add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
